COMMISSION - 50th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
Some very dear friends of mine asked that I create a piece for their parents, not only to honour but also celebrate their 50 years of marriage. Before making the piece I familiarized myself with this special couples’ lifetime journey, important symbology/numerology, their favourite colours, preferred styles, and most importantly, the spiritual qualities and gifts they each bring to their sacred union.
I was inspired by a section that appears in a Baha’i Marriage prayer which says “He hath let loose the two seas, that they meet each other: Between them is a barrier which they overpass not." In the piece, the 2 large braids represent husband and wife and the sacred space that is to exist between people, even in the most intimate of unions. These braids are surrounded by the burnt-orange braid, representing how God and the divine is always present, from the beginning of the union and into eternity. Around the braids, in the cream colour are 3 knotted textures, representing the 3 cities this couple has lived in. The white section at the top left represents their unwavering faith, something their children shared with me which characterize them both. It is that constant thread. And right over that white section there are 50 jewels, representing their 50 years together. The curves and organic movement, woven through the very organized and calculated threads are the mixture of both their energies: one as the organic, curving, wandering, ocean-loving, creative soul and the other being the logical, methodical and organized soul. They both compliment each other beautifully this way in the tapestry of their life. The top and bottom are burnt-orange braids represent the 2 generations of children and grandchildren...their legacy.
COMMISSION - 20th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
My friends, Julie and Fanfan, wanted a piece to honour their 20 years together, their 3 children, and their incredible journey. I’ve woven in meaningful symbols and numerology.
The blues and neutrals, were not only requested by the couple but after some research, I found that blue is the colour of bravery, dedication, representing introspective journeys and symbolizing wisdom and depth of understanding. The 2 thicker teal/blue braids represent the couple. The 3 smaller braids (light blue, cream, white) represent their 3 children. A golden accent braid symbolizes God's presence and protection throughout their union. The white section at the top left represents their faith, that constant thread. Between the threads are 9 golden knots, 9 being the numerical value of their wedding day!! Some areas are empty, unwoven. I was inspired by a section that appears in a Baha’i Marriage prayer which says “He hath let loose the two seas, that they meet each other: Between them is a barrier which they overpass not." These spaces represent that sacred space that is to exist between people, even in the most intimate of unions. Tree knotted cream textures represent their challenges, triumphs and wisdom woven into their love. The curves and organic movement woven through the very organized threads represent the constant but organic nature of growth. Never-ending braids and patterns symbolize their journey, reaching into the future. The small blue wave at the bottom right represents their cherished connection with the husband's mom.
MY WEDDING DAY
I made this piece for our wedding day, July 23, 2022. It was a perfect day full of overwhelming love and absolute joy. The outpour of support and love from our family and community was enormous. Not only did this day mark the love and commitment that Kyle and I share and the fortress we are building for our family, but it signalled the fruits of my healing journey, my determination to live a life full of love, joy, safety, prosperity and spiritual growth. As my two children walked me down the aisle, I couldn’t help but feel that the heavens were smiling and celebrating us. The night before our wedding, a bolt of lightning ⚡️ hit the earth, just a meter away from the spot where we exchanged our vows. It felt like a divine acknowledgement, a welcoming and an electrical explosion that honoured the past and signalled a new beginning. I had emerged out of years of darkness and this moment shined so bright that even the skies were welcoming our union ✨
I made this piece a few days before the wedding. Instead of doing a bachelorette party, I decided to leave the city for some alone time. Not only to make this piece but to create space to honour and close the previous chapter of my life and welcome this new one. At the centre of this piece is an amethyst crystal. Amethyst is a powerful and protective stone that offers protection and spiritual wisdom, qualities that I wished to call in for my marriage. Purple is also the highest colour of the spectrum, the high vibrational top chakra that connects us to the divine. It’s also Kyle’s favourite colour.
The strands, braids, and knots in this piece represent our friends and community who have stood by and with us the past few years. Through difficulty but also fun and beautiful moments. In this piece, I wanted to honour all of this and let it embrace us as we shared our vows with the world. It hangs from an arch which was built from a tree by a father for their daughter’s wedding. My cousins used it on their wedding days so it felt so special to have it for ours and be connected with them in this way.
